As part of our European Solidarity Corps project, one of our volunteer activities is to teach English classes in the local neighbourhood centre on Wednesdays. There are groups of children (up to ten years old) and teenagers there (from 11-18). We assist them in understanding and learning the English language. Sofi teaches children’s classes, and I teach teenagers’ classes.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet locals and learn about the Spanish educational system. The children are wonderful and enthusiastic about learning, and we thoroughly enjoy this activity. We converse with them in Spanish, which allows us to practice our language skills. They are very interested in learning about our Italian and Serbian culture and traditions, so we include them in our classes as well, contrasting them with Spanish and Catalan culture.
The centre hosts university visits on occasion, and doctoral students prepare a class on a topic of their choosing. We had a visit last week from a girl who studies nanoparticles and presented them to both groups. She demonstrated what nanoparticles are and how she got to that topic through an interactive presentation, discussions, and activities. Everyone was interested and wanted to learn more about it.

Una de nuestras actividades de voluntariado, que forma parte de proyecto del Cuerpo Europeo de Solidaridad, es dar clases de inglés en el Casal de barri los miércoles. Hay grupos de niños (hasta diez años) y adolescentes (de 11 a 18 años). Los asistimos en la comprensión y el aprendizaje del inglés. Sofi da clases de niños y yo doy clases de adolescentes.
Es una oportunidad fantástica para conocer gente local y aprender sobre el sistema educativo español. Los niños son maravillosos y están entusiasmados con el aprendizaje, y disfrutamos mucho de esta actividad. Conversamos con ellos en español, lo que nos permite practicar nuestras habilidades lingüísticas. Están muy interesados en aprender sobre nuestra cultura y tradiciones italianas y serbias, por lo que también incluimos estos elementos en nuestras clases, contrastándolos con la cultura española y catalana.
El centro acoge visitas universitarias en ocasiones, y los doctorandos preparan una clase sobre un tema preferido. La semana pasada nos visitó una chica que estudia nanopartículas y las presentó a ambos grupos. Demostró qué son las nanopartículas y cómo llegó a ese tema a través de una presentación interactiva, debates y actividades. Todos estaban cautivados y querían aprender más sobre esto.
